The Ozarks are said to be some of the oldest mountains in the United States. They are modest as mountains go, but you can feel their age (and yours) when you walk around in them. If you live here long enough, you start talking like them: rough, rocky, by turns arid and tropical, shifty as a bobcat and glad as a black-eyed susan.
